Outbreaks constitute unique events during which much can be learned about effective methods to prevent diseases. In the specific case of infectious diseases, outbreaks usually reflect a change in the relationship between
(1) the host,
(2) the agent and
(3) the environment.
All these mechanisms must be understood to propose adequate control measures. Understanding these mechanisms require a systematic methodological approach.
